Amped Wireless' UA600EX adapter quadruples your laptop's WiFi range when you're on a boat

from Engadget by Dana Wollman

For every gadget you can use on land, there has to be one you can use at sea, right? Just in time for yachting season, Amped Wireless released the weatherproof UA600EX High Power Wireless-N 600mW Pro USB Adapter, which promises to extend your notebook's WiFi range in areas where there are no hotspots to be mooched. That sounds ideal for boating, but thanks to some flexible mounting options and one heavy-duty 26.5-foot cable, it should also come in handy everywhere from offices to RVs. The single-band UA600EX runs on the 2.4GHz spectrum, and although the company stops short of saying just how many feet of leeway you can expect, it does claim to quadruple your computer's range -- whatever that happens to be. If you have a hankering to watch Deadliest Catch on your next fishing trip, you can nab one of these bad boys at the source link for a cool $110.

Superyacht Law Firm will Rebrand to become Gateley

Top superyacht law firm HBJ Gateley Wareing is to rename and will from, 1st May 2011, adopt the name Gateley as its new brand.

The change is a natural step for the firm whose HBJ Gateley Wareing name is reflective of the history of the firm but is, they say, too long.  The firm had over the years acquired several other law firms and as it did so, so the name grew!

The firm can trace its Marine Law specialism back to 1808 and has an unbroken record in the marine industry since then.  In recent years it has absorbed the London firms of Shaw & Croft along with Holmes Hardingham both of who were active in yachting and have a long history in servicing the legal requirements of superyacht owners

Already widely known as Gateley the firm has finally acknowledged that clients sometimes struggle to identify the brand. Opening offices recently in Manchester and Dubai they feel the time is right to make the change and allow the firm to focus on a single, strong brand.

The new name is accompanied by a new corporate identity based on current branding, which is reflected in their re-launched website at www.gateleyuk.com

Whitey McDonald - Master of the sea - in a very close call

Whilst in the Bahamas this winter, this monster made a sudden lunge for me, but alas, and to his eternal dismay, I was too quick with my trusty spear and dispatched the beast micro-seconds before he sunk his giant fangs into my throat ! And in another very close call I almost ran out of rum one day.

LOWISA's 6th annual Arctic Glacier Youth Ya Gotta Regatta

For 2011 we’ve reinvented the Arctic Glacier Youth Ya Gotta Regatta!! It was meant to be fun. Then it got serious. Seriously fun and for 2011 - this is one Sic Youth Regatta. It’s been described as one part sailing, one part motocross, and one part snowboarding; it’s unorthodox, "Un-Regatta" format is designed to emphasize fun, over results.

The format is fast paced, and it does not totally follow the stuffy Rules of Racing. No need to do the foul purging 360; dip your mast in the water instead! In our “Un-Regatta” that’ll purge your foul. Instead of the traditional start line we’ve got a Grand Prix hot dock start. And there’s no finish line either. Rather, you’ll have to ring the finishers’ bell on the dock. But not so fast, because at both the start and finish, you’ll have to speed walk to and from your boats. Why, because the PRO says so!!

We’ve done away with the round-the-cans racing format for the Arctic Glacier Youth Ya Gotta Regatta. Instead, it’s a pursuit style race which will start at Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club and finish at Kenora’s Harbourfront Thistle Pavilion. The starts are timed so that the slowest boats or fleets will start first and the fastest boats and fleets, last. It’s timed so that the majority of the participants will arrive at the Harbourfront at approximately 1:00 PM – just in time for FREE lunch and FREE Pepsi product beverages. Did we mention that this is a FREE regatta, thanks to our title sponsor Arctic Glacier Inc. – there’s no entry fee. It’s a dinghy event open to all youth who are under the age of 18 as at July 29th, 2011.

Some of the participants will be seasoned sailors, while others are novices and although there will be excellent racing, removing the win-at-all-costs atmosphere will make it fun for parents, team leaders, and kids alike. Did we mention too, that on-the-water coaching for the novices and the mid-sailors is not only welcome, it’s encouraged. For some kids, the freestyle will be the most memorable part of the on the water events. (Freestyle tricks will allow participants to deduct up to a maximum of 10 minutes from their on-the-water time). For others it will be the pursuit style course or maybe just the camaraderie at a new venue, and the relaxed atmosphere.
But that’s not all, AND THIS PART IS TOP SECRET AND NEED TO KNOW STUFF, so keep it in your sail bags.

Special Harbourfront Event:

Confirmation will be made at the Skippers’ Meeting. The FLASHMOB is anticipated for 2:00 PM, July 29th, in the area of the Thistle Pavilion, water side.

FLASHMOB - a tribute to Michael Jackson’s contributions to dance and music –preformed to his hit single, Beat It. See what it’s all about and learn the moves from You Tube videos like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je1KOcBYGjM. (Keep in mind that the FlashMob videos that are showcased are from megapolitans like Stockholm. Kenora is world class in every way, but there is a considerable population difference and the “mob” will be considerably less.)

REMEMBER: It’s extremely important that information relating to this FLASHMOB is held closely. Once you’ve viewed the YouTube link above, it will become clear that spontaneity and surprise are tantamount to its success. For maximum effect, information and details about the FLASHMOB should not be shared, but when sharing is necessary, information should be disseminated strictly, on a need to know basis.

There should be lots of other kids there and media coverage, too. Let’s make history together. What a blast it will be!!

Charter Yacht ANAHITA - Winter: Caribbean / Summer: Eastern Mediterranean Yacht Charters
    COMMENTS:
It is fair to say that -- having sailed only in the Mediterranean and never in “Proper” oceans -- I was somewhat worried regards to crossing the Atlantic, my journey into the unknown! I needed not have worried: From the moment I stepped aboard I felt at ease and very much enjoyed the crossing -- So many thanks for making it so easy: Well hosted. Best wishes to you both for much happiness together, kind seas, and fair winds. If you ever find your way to York, make sure you look me up.
    - Bruce (Antigua-Azores-Gibraltar, May 2-June 1, 2010
There are many stories to be told about four guys on a 3,228 mile, 29-day transatlantic crossing, but the one that strikes me as being the best is meeting the Anahita captain, Bijan. Myself an owner of a 1980 38’ Shannon cutter ketch with two transatlantic crossings, I would say this crossing (12/01/09 -12/29/09) was one of the easiest of the three. As a captain you should know & be able to diagnose every sound emanating from your boat, understand & never chance your boat's abilities under all sea conditions, & have an ability to take command of all crew situations. I can say from doing this trip with Bijan that he is aware of all of these situations, even while asleep. The boat is equipped with two types of communication with the land via sailmail, an email service, & satellite telephone. I had been in contact through sailmail with my family & thereby kept them informed as to where the boat was & that all was as well. Now as for luxury, I can truly say there is nothing missing in accommodations or entertainment (Plasma TV for evening movies). My room was large, airy, & comfortable for two & extremely large for one. Of course, it has a head with shower with enough hot water to keep you happy. The galley was a delight to work in with a three-burner stove & oven that was easy to handle & make delicious hot evening meals. We even made fresh bread in the electric bread maker. Over all the Anahita was a delight to spend time on & would give anyone a great time to remember.
    - Regards, Noah (Gibraltar to St Martin, Nov. 2009)

What a wonderful opportunity of an adventure charter this will be for 2-4 lucky people.  We love passages. It is so cool to look out and just see water all the way out to the horizon... Of course, you'll see the occasional ship and flotsam can get quite exciting.  Maybe you will even catch a nice fish for dinner on your way!

Bijan and Roseanne look forward to having you aboard.

Semana Santa in Cartagena ..... April 2011

Locals in folk costume on Patron Saints Day
    15 - 25 April 2011

The yearly Easter celebrations in Cartagena start with Viernes de Dolores, Day of the Patrona, on the Friday before Palm Sunday.

At 5pm, thousands of locals gather in the main Plaza to take part in the Ofrenda floral, a colourful procession in which families dress in folk costume, carrying bouquets of flowers, and walk through the streets then give their floral offerings to the towns patron saint.

From then on the parades/processions were a daily occurence, right through until Easter Sunday.
    More colourful local costumes on
     Cartagena Patron Saint Day

The first night for us was the most powerful, as hundreds of townspeople marched the narrow streets, some wearing plush red velvet cloaks, many with the hoods up.  They were interspersed by equally as many processioners in blood red long satin robes, rustling as they went by, their heads and faces covered by what I could only describe as a Klu Klux Klan hood, with the tall pointy top and slits for their eyes.  Not a word was spoken, and sitting there watching this solemn mass of people slowly walk by, the scent of inscense in the air, the drums pounding in the distant, it was a powerful - almost scary scene.
The first had the most impact on us

On each night leading up to Easter Sunday the processions would generally start at 9pm (it's still light here now until around 9.20pm) and most of the time they would last at least 2 hours, some longer.  One evening all the town lights were extinguished and the processions were by candlelit, affording an even more sombre  mood.

Of course, as with most things, once you have seen a couple of 2 or 3 hour processions, they do start to look rather the same.  There were certainly many different costumes, and each night there would also be a parade of floats, often carried by over a hundred men or women.  They depicted the different stages leading up to resurrection of Christ.

It was great to be here and experience this week of celebrations.  We also had some "down under" company during this time.  Phil and Margaret off the Australian trawler Argos were in port, after wintering in Barcelona.  We wintered in Marmaris with them in 2008, and first saw them way back in 2005.  It was great to have some friends in town, even for just a few days.

Evening processions took place every night for a week
Today is Easter Monday, it is not a holiday here which we find rather strange, but after so many days of a festive atmosphere maybe they are all worn out and eager to get back to their normal lives again.  We are still at a loss as to when the Spaniards actually sleep, after being in Spain now for 7 months we still can't get used to the times things happen.  Restaurants not opening until 9pm - then not getting busy till around 10.30pm is still so foreign to us.  The opening hours for businesses and retail is an ongoing mystery, with many, but not all, observing a daily siesta.  Sundays are still a day of rest, cafes and bars are open but nothing else here is.  But on a fine Sunday, after church, the squares and waterfront are crowded with families and friends out strolling, promenading, chatting, children playing - enjoying their leisure time without any outside distractions.
There were many hundreds dressed like this

The "to do" list is all done, sure there are still more jobs that would be good to do (have to save something for next year) but Balvenie is now looking the best she has since we bought her.  We have endless new systems installed and it is nearly time to untie the docklines, get out there and test all our work and set sail for another season,

We have loved our time in the Med and very much enjoyed Europe but Balvenie is straining at her lines as once again the western horizon calls her....best we go along for the ride !!

(for more photos of the parades click here )

May 2011 - Latitudes and Attitudes

During the ongoing research for you, the readers of this blog, I found four separate articles relating to cruisers/yachties and piracy.

Page 20, a regular column by Tania Aebi discussing changes in the Indian Ocean/Gulf of Aden over the last twenty years or so, finishing with a comment,'..practicing avoidance rather than confrontation.'

Page 40, 'A Cruise Along the Troubled Coast', concerning Venezuela.

Page 120, a write-up regarding GOST Immobilizer, a fairly inexpensive piece of kit that may help you protect your dinghy/tender.

Page 18, a short article about the Seven Seas Cruising Association's 'A Call to Action'.

I believe a picture is worth a thousand words - here's two thousand for you today.

Straying a bit from my main theme of yacht security, these are examples of what happens to threats to commercial shipping.

Professional Qualifications for Interior Crew on Superyachts

The Professional Yachtsman’s Association (PYA) has agreed to lead a training project that could in the future lead to interior yacht crew sitting exams for formal qualifications

Interior yacht crew who work in the hotel department of the superyacht have the vital and fundamental front line role of service to owners and guests.  It is they who ensure that the service and hospitality provided aboard is of the highest quality.

Yet there has been little formal training available for this role and what training that does exist varies widely in both its objectives and its standards.

Following a well attended public meeting at the recent Antibes Yacht Show and in response to demands from interior crew, Captains and Training Providers; the PYA has agreed to lead the development of a formal career structure for training and certification for Interior crew.

Now that the PYA have established and identified the need for a standard of training, they have agreed to lead an industry working group that will create a formal structure for the training and professional development of interior crew, similar to the existing training route for deck and engineering crew.

The working group is made up of the Association’s own Continuous Professional Development workgroup, along with other industry professionals, such as active crew and leading training providers.

As part of the development process, the committee are keen to have feedback from interior crew and are sending out online surveys to those who have expressed an interest in participating.

The career structure is expected to provide a balance of experience, combining formal training plus onboard work experience to create a training ladder leading from entry-level as a junior stewardess / steward right up to Purser.

There will be a syllabus, setting out the minimum training to be given at each level, and any school that meets this requirement can apply for accreditation to issue PYA endorsed certificates to students who successfully complete these courses.

The PYA aims to announce the results of this project at the Monaco Yacht Show later this year.

To The Monaco Yacht Show by Kayak

Pass me the paddle, I'm off to Monaco
Most exhibitors arrive on the Cote d’Azure for the Monaco Yacht Show using airplanes, boats, cars and even trains as forms of transport, yet one man plans to paddle there.

Chris Allix, a 58-year-old company director is going to leave his base in the Isle of Man and travel to Monaco by kayak!

Even his nearest and dearest doubted his sanity when he first told them of his plan to paddle the estimated 2,000 miles by way of sea, rivers and canals in aid of five children's charities, but they all agreed, he says, that he was mad enough to succeed.
Kayak Chris faces challenge of a lifetime - for charity
Chris, director of the Isle of Man-based ICM Group, has a close relationship with the sea and Monaco through his company Dominion Marine Corporate Services the Manx yacht registration business.

He has spent the last nine months preparing for this his personal challenge of a lifetime. He has done so training in Manx coastal waters and in arduous conditions in the Lake District. Now weighing 16 stone he has lost three stone in weight and learned the hard way how to refine his kayaking skills in some of the toughest white water conditions imaginable.

The planned route, starting this summer, will take him across the Irish Sea to England down through the English canal network to Dover and the English Channel where he hopes to cross to France,"

Then he takes on the French canals and rivers making my way south to arrive in The Principality in time for the first day of the Monaco International Yacht Show on September 21.

He says, "It will be a long and incredibly difficult task but although this will be my challenge of a lifetime, it's really all about raising money for the children's charities - so I need a lot of help and support from sponsors."

To help achieve his objective, Chris has set up his own special website under the banner  'Man to Monaco'. Apart from providing route details, regular information and updates, it also appeals for corporate and individual sponsors.

Charter Yacht FLAME - ALL INCLUSIVE Virgin Islands Motor Yacht

The charter yacht FLAME, a 65-foot Feadship motor yacht, is one of our favorite charter yachts in the Virgin Islands.

Charter Yacht Flame - Crewed Caribbean Yacht Charters in the Virgin Islands

Wayne & Barbara, owner-operators of Flame, have been chartering for 20-some years and they still enjoy sharing their boat and the islands with their guests. Jacob, the ship's cat has been aboard for about 5 years now, and is much loved by all.

Flame is a fully air conditioned, 65-foot Feadship motoryacht that accommodates up to 6 guests in 3 equivalent cabins, each with private ensuite head/shower. Originally built in 1956, she has a classic style that is very appealing.  Flame has a large, covered aft deck which is great for dining and just relaxing out of the direct sun, yet still enjoying the cooling tradewinds. They have a 15-foot dinghy with a 85HP motor, waterskis, tube, snorkel equipment, 2-person kayak, two TV/VCR/DVD, iPod with 6000+ songs that can be broadcast in any cabin, bocci and lots of other beach games, too!

Our YouTube.com video slideshow for the charter yacht Flame

Way back when Wayne & Barb discovered Flame, she was in quite a state of disrepair (fire damaged as I recall, hence the name "Flame") but it was love at first sight. Flame's restoration and reconfiguration took a full three years and they did all the work themselves. Their love for their home truly shows with the meticulous upkeep and maintenance they bestow upon her.  A very fine vessel, indeed.

In the summer months when they are not chartering, they restore antique speedboats (classic mahogany Chris Crafts and Gar Woods) and cars, as well as remodelling and landscaping their place up in New England. Busy folks while on vacation...
