We had a recent email from Phil and Laura, owner-operators of one of our favorite charter yachts Storm Petrel...

Coming back from Culebra recently, saw two groups of 2 or 3 humpback whales... one of which we almost rammed.

We have some great pics of a baby humpback breaching with Storm Petrel in the background off Beef Island (British Virgin Islands).

Storm Petrel is definitely one of our favorite charter yachts.  They are an excellent choice for a couple, and quite affordable for families with small children (2 kids can sleep in salon).

Storm Petrel is a Robert's designed 44-foot Offshore 44 sloop, owned and operated by Phil Levine along with his girlfriend, Laura. Storm Petrel has a queen cabin aft and a V-berth cabin forward. They have an 11-foot dinghy with 15HP motor, windsurfer, hammock, snorkel equipment, etc. Besides enjoying windsurfing, Phil also does kite boarding! He has three kites and a couple of boards on his boat, in addition to his windsurfing gear. Alcoholic beverages are not included in their rates, but they will stock with your preferences at cost.

RATE: All inclusive, except bar

• $4900/wk for 4 guests 

Storm Petrel does both term charters and day sails in New England throughout the summer months.

Sailing Vacations & Seamanship Courses in New England

Bonnie Lynn is a 72-foot (LOA) custom steel topsail schooner that accommodates 6 guests (8 if family) in 3 cabins. The forward cabin has upper/lower bunks to port with another twin (or settee) which can be pulled out to a double berth, to starboard. The other two guest cabins have double berths.

Besides standard term charters, Bonnie Lynn is certified for 36 passengers for day sails, and is also permitted to carry out offshore charters (US Coast Guard Certified 36 passengers day - 8 Oceans under Sub Chapter T)

We used to visit Bonnie Lynn when we would come across her in St Martin or the Virgin Islands. Such a beautiful boat with a lovely interior. I was always amazed at how skillful Bonnie is at handling an angle grinder and welding. Unfortunately for us, they no longer cruise the Caribbean in the winter so we can only see them at the Newport charter yacht show. One year, I had a bowl of Bonnie's award-winning chowder. Mmmmm, a wonderful bowl of hot steamy goodness which was greatly appreciated to someone from the Caribbean who is no longer accustomed to the chill of the frozen north :)

SEAMANSHIP COURSES FOR THE 2011 SEASON

During the months of June & October the Schooner Bonnie Lynn will be offering Junior and Adult Seamanship Courses out of Newport, Rhode Island.

• Two-day course: $300/person --- Three-day course: $450/person

They will be offering Junior Seamanship Courses on Islesboro, Maine again this summer, as well as expanding the program to include adult courses. Stay tuned -- the Islesboro schedule will be posted at a later date.

"Our goal is that the students who take our course will be better prepared to handle the unexpected circumstances that can arise when boating. An increased awareness will help them avoid dangerous situations. BONNIE LYNN is the ideal classroom. Last summer, in our beautiful homeport of Islesboro, Maine, we offered 2 day / 1 night courses for 9 - 11 year olds and 3 day / 2 night courses for 12-15 year olds. Six to eight students slept onboard and worked as part of the crew."

Charter Yacht STORM PETREL - Comments - Daysail New England

Last Tuesday we had a woman call about a surprise birthday present for her husband. He enjoys sailing but no longer has his own boat. She said that he'd be so happy to be out on the water again. His birthday was that Friday and she'd like to arrange for a daysail charter (Thursday, if possible) in New England... How about STORM PETREL?  Perfect :)

Called Phil, no problem. He has a charter for the weekend, but Thursday would be great. Hooked him up with the wife so they could discuss charter details such as meeting place and lunch arrangements.

AFTER CHARTER COMMENTS: "Brian and the gang had a great time. Brian was thrilled and is talking about getting another sailboat. God help us!"

We just received an email from Phil & Laura of Storm Petrel to let us know that they have arrived safely in Massachusetts.  The trip from St Thomas, US Virgin Islands to MA only took ten days... Good going, guys!

Laura says that she hooked a 25-pound Mahi Mahi but lost it after a 15-minute struggle... So It Goes...

Storm Petrel is available for yacht charters in New England this summer. Charters of any length can be accommodated... Just ask :)

Storm Petrel's base is in Buzzards Bay, so Phil likes to pick up at North Falmouth, near the Bourne Bridge. Phil is from that neck of the woods and has an incredible amount of local knowledge about this area. It would be a fun trip.

Perhaps a 4th of July charter... Newport Jazz or Folk Festivals... Labor Day... Summer BBQ???

M/Y TIVOLI is available for summer 2009 in New England for term charters or day charters at very special rates.

New England Catamaran Charter, Summer 2009

Entrepreneurship (or E-Ship), presently in the Virgin Islands will be available this summer in New England. Based in the Newport Area, she will consider charters along the New England coast.



Whether you are looking for a weekend itinerary or longer, Entrepreneurship can provide a relaxing, yet fun filled holiday.

RATES: Summer 2009, New England, plus all expenses

• $8,500/wk for up to 4 guests, Captain Only, plus all expenses

E-ship is fully air conditioned, 50-foot Catana catamaran, and accommodates up to 4 guests in your choice of cabins. The starboard hull is the master cabin. It has a king-size berth, with ensuite head plus separate shower stall. For the other guest cabin, you can choose which port-side cabin is best suited for your party. The forward cabin has a double, while the aft cabin has twin berths. All cabins have ensuite head/shower.

Charter RUNAWAY for a day in the Virgin Islands

Besides doing their excellent standard, all-inclusive term charters, RUNAWAY (82-foot Azimut motoryacht) is also available for day charters in the Virgin Islands.



Jim, owner-operator of Runaway, recently wrote to us concerning their day trips, saying that they usually go from St. Thomas to Normal Island or Jost Van Dyke. They will go to The Baths for an additional $200.

We inquired about diving as Jim is also a PDIC Dive Instructor. He said that he hadn't thought about including diving, nobody has ever asked before. But, if we have a particular group that would like to dive, they can make it happen and would include it in the rate. A possibility would be a 2-tank dive on The Rhone.

• RATE: $3,000 for up to 6 guests, 8:30am to 5pm

The price includes continental breakfast on boarding with coffee, bloody Mary's or mimosas, and open bar all day.

Lunch is a substantial buffet style affair, including jerk chicken, blackened mahi mahi, Caesar salad, pasta salad, and fruit platter.

Of course watersports such as snorkeling, waterskiing, or tubing is included.

It's a full, fun day!
