Yacht Charter Comments: CONTESSA

Thank you Richard & Denise for giving our repeat clients a wonderful vacation aboard Contessa!

Charter dates = December 28, 2008 - January 4, 2009

Yacht = CONTESSA

How did you enjoy your charter?
Without question we enjoyed our charter. This was the 5th sailing vacation for us and the first for the P's. Laura P. (age 21) and Michael P. (age 18) had the time of their life.

Did you find your crew to be helpful, accommodating and friendly?
Capt. Richard and Denise couldn't have been nicer.

Was the yacht comfortable, clean and well maintained?
The Contessa was a beautiful boat. The cabins were very clean and comfortable.

How would you describe the quality and presentation of the meals served on board?
The meals were delicious and the food plentiful, which is important when traveling with two young men (ages 15 & 18).

How did you find the services offered by Paradise Connections?
This is the 4th time we have chartered with Paradise Connections and everything went smoothly. I would recommend you to anyone.

Would you be interested in taking another yacht vacation in the future?
I am sure we will be taking another sailing vacation sometime in the next 2 years.

If so, would you like to charter the same yacht and crew?
We would definitely charter again with the Contessa.

It not too early to book for NEXT Christmas / New Years !!!

Antigua arrests
By IBI Magazine/Michael Howorth
Jolyon Menhinick of yacht brokerage company Archibald Reid & Co, whose offices are in Antigua, has told IBI that Antiguan police have arrested four people for questioning in the matter of the murder of Australian captain Drew Gollan, who was the master of the motorsailing yacht Perseus. The ages of those detained range from 17 years to 27 and one of those held is female. At this stage there is little other news.

This morning's Dutch bridge opening in St. Maarten was quite moving... As the sailing yacht PERSEUS entered the lagoon everyone saluted the yacht with their horns. It lasted about 5 minutes.

Our sincere condolences to all...

76 knots in Marmaris ... Jan 2009

28 January 2009

***This was L dock at Netsel, it just sort of buckled upwards and snapped, at least it stayed in one piece!!***The storm came from the south and brought with it plenty of African dust, it rained mud for a few hours***Very unfortunate sight at Netsel Marina, luckily major damage avoided by landing on the building***The cockpit was clean before but it just blew dust and dirt***

While parts of France and Spain have been badly damaged and lives lost in dreadful storms, little ole Marmaris has unfortunately been getting its share also, although luckily not as bad. We were forecast to receive a storm from the south with gusts to 50knots to arrive overnight Friday night. As with most of the weather forecasting here it was pretty accurate, but it just built and built and kept building.

Arriving in the wee small hours and building to 40knots quickly we were hoping for a short sharp blast and then resume normal quiet life but by daybreak things were still building. The yacht pictured had left their headsail on and not locked it off properly, the wind caught and unfurled it, of course making the yacht want to sail away, with devastating consequences. While this was going on our dock decided to part company with the main concrete pontoon, it was still all anchored and chained down, but no longer attached to solid land. Not a reassuring thought as the winds kept building. Then the cleats on the docks started popping out of the concrete pontoon, as each one went it then meant that the boats attached to it were no longer attached to the dock!! All hands were on deck, including all liveaboards, marina and charter boat staff to retie to other cleats, of course adding extra load to the remaining cleats, but desperately trying to keep the boats attached.

Still the wind was building, our cockpit wind instrument peaks at 50 knots, it was being pinned on 50 knots for minutes at a time. The noise was horrendous, the spray and sea state in the marina unbelievable, and still it kept coming. We were now getting gusts over 70 knots, and the highest recorded was 76knots, that's way too high. We were watching the clouds build and build, desperately hoping for the rain to start which usually settles the wind down, but more carnage occurred.

A few bow lines broke on boats around us, necessitating the marinaros to take temporary lines into the tender and go across the marina to attach to the far docks. Once the bow lines go there is nothing to stop the boats from falling back onto the dock, damaging their sterns or from being pushed by the wind onto the boats adjacent.

Meanwhile there was minor damage occurring everywhere, awnings shredded, dodgers blown away, the plastic windows in our canopy were blown out, fenders were popping, mooring lines shearing, dinghies flying off decks - then at last around 10.00am, the rain came and the winds started to ease. I remember coming below and thinking how quiet it was now the wind had eased, I looked at our wind instruments and we were getting 38 knots - NEVER have I thought 38 knots was peaceful!!!!!

The heavy rain, actually falling African mud, lasted only a few hours but what a mess it made, it looked like we were to be covered in a layer of clay when it set. So we have been cleaning up since, Mark has hosed all the dirt away inbetween downpours, I have fixed 2 of the windows but am awaiting the easing of the rain for long enough to remove the canopy before I can fix the last one. The marina staff are trying to get the marina back together again, power was only out for about 7hours, water is still off on our side of the dock, and we still have to walk over 18 lines that run across our dock to get to the end as they can not bed new cleats in the rain, its like doing a 200metre hurdles!!!!

Overnight we had another blast of 40knots through and we sat and prayed for nothing higher and it looks like things will calm down for a few days. We shall be very glad when this is all over, the wind dies, the rain ends and the sun comes back to play.

Yacht Skipper Shot and Killed in Antigua

From Noonsite - http://www.noonsite.com/Members/sue/R2009-01-25-1/view

Yacht Skipper Shot and Killed in Antigua

Widely reported in the yachting and international press

A gunman shot and killed the Australian skipper of a yacht in Antigua on Thursday night, 22 January 2009.

The victim, Drew Gollan, Captain of the 163 foot sailing yacht "Perseus" (a Perini Navi ketch), was walking after dark on the road between English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour. He was shot in the chest at close range outside the Gallery Bar. A source on the island said that he was shot in front of his partner, Elena and young child.

Yachting World were told that Drew and Elena had hired a house on the road behind the Gallery Bar and were on their way home after dinner. An attacker tried to grab Elena's bag and a gun went off in the struggle, the bullet apparently grazing her foot. Drew chased after the attacker and in an ensuing struggle was shot twice in the chest.

Police Commissioner Thomas Bennett said that currently no arrests have been made.

There are many restaurants in this area usually heavily populated by the sailing community in the evenings. The shooting is reported to have outraged boaters, business owners and local residents and the police have again come under criticism for not protecting the yacht packed English Harbour area.

According to locals, the tragic death is just one more symptom of the increasing drug problem that the island has been battling recently.

The charter and holiday season is at its height in Antigua and this killing comes on top of a number of other attacks including a reported armed robbery at a club on the island and an attack on two hostesses from another yacht.

Yachts due to leave over the next few days have brought their departure plans forward and are on their way out of the island.

This killing has happened in the heart of the yachting community and is bound to have far reaching effects in an area which depends on the yachting trade.

Comment: I have not heard of the actual circumstances involved (i.e. is the drug problem involved? random violence?) As the economic conditions increase the disparity between poor and rich, more cruisers and yachtsmen will be targeted as "rich, easy" prey. Please practice sound situational awareness and take measures to make yourselves a "hard" target.

EPIRB Bulletin and AIS Information

Beware! - Emergency Services Will Not Respond

From 1st February, 2009, the International Cospas-Sarsat Program will terminate satellite processing of distress signals from 121.5/243 MHz emergency beacons (EPIRBs and PLBs); only distress signals from the newer 406 MHz EPRIBs and PLBs will be processed.

The bottom line is that if you are still carrying one of the 121.5/243 MHz EPIRBs or PLBs in February, and you find you are in significant distress, requiring immediate rescue assistance, don't bother flicking the switch . . . instead you can make the last entry in your diary: that you should have given yourself a new, 406 for Christmas.

Somali Piracy Update

From IBI:

http://www.ibinews.com/ibinews/newsdesk/20090005111514ibinews.html

Somali piracy update

By IBI Magazine/Michael Howorth

New evidence in from Somalia makes it clear that the yacht attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden on December 17 managed to evade capture and has arrived safely at the port of Salalah in Oman.

Speaking exclusively to IBI, Andrew Mwangura, who works for the Kenya-based East African Seafarers Assistance programme, told us that the yacht was carrying Yemeni coastguard officers who had been contracted on board as ship-riders. It was they who opened fire on an approaching skiff after radio-warnings transmitted by the yacht were not adhered to and the skiff continued to maintain a collision course even after the yacht had made several course adjustments.

The skiff eventually turned away after several shots were fired and did not return. The yacht was then able to disembark the guards at a Yemen border-port before proceeding undisturbed to her final destination. We are still not able to confirm with accuracy the name, size or nationality of the yacht, nor do we know how many crew were on board at the time of the attack.

Meanwhile, Mwangura tells us that negotiations for the release of several cargo ship crews taken hostage in the Gulf of Aden continue with debates on how the ransoms will be delivered. "There are two methods which have been approved by the pirates," he said. "The gunmen are demanding the money be dropped by air from a helicopter or plane in a balloon that will not sink, or for the ransom to be delivered by ship." Mwangura believes that delivery from the air is the most likely of methods to be used.

Catamaran AMARYLLIS - LOWER RATES FOR 2009 SEASON

CATAMARAN AMARYLLIS lowers their rates for the 2009 season.

Amaryllis is a 45-foot Privilege catamaran that accommodates up to 6 guests in three double cabins.

In light of the soft economy, Amaryllis has decided to drop their rates for the 2008/2009 season. Their reduced rates are:
  • 2 guests: $8500
  • 3 guests: $9000
  • 4 guests: $9500
  • 5 guests: $10,250
  • 6 guests: $11,000
For family charters they are offering "1 child free". This means that family of four, for example, can get the 3-person rate of $9000. A "child" is defined as anyone 17-years old or under.

Amaryllis also offers a "sleep over" rate for guests who arrive late into St. Thomas (after dark). Instead of staying in a hotel their first night, they can come directly to the boat. Amaryllis will have dinner and drinks ready. Breakfast will be provided the following morning and guests will be able to get a jump-start on their vacation. The price for this service is the equivalent of their half-day rate.

Also, for those who want to take less than a week's vacation, Amaryllis is offering a 2-5 day USVI package and waiving the 10% surcharge for charters less than 6 days. No time is wasted clearing customs as the charter stays in USVI waters. Pick up can be on St. Thomas or St. John making this ideal for guests who want some time on the water and some time ashore at a resort or villa.
