Know the signs of drowning

The new captain jumped from the cockpit, fully dressed, and sprinted through the water. A former lifeguard, he kept his eyes on his victim as he headed straight for the owners who were swimming between their anchored sportfisher and the beach. “I think he thinks you’re drowning,” the husband said to his wife. They had been splashing each other and she had screamed but now they were just standing, neck-deep on the sand bar. “We’re fine, what is he doing?” she asked, a little annoyed. “We’re fine!” the husband yelled, waving him off, but his captain kept swimming hard. ”Move!” he barked as he sprinted between the stunned owners. Directly behind them, not ten feet away, their nine-year-old daughter was drowning. Safely above the surface in the arms of the captain, she burst into tears, “Daddy!”

How did this captain know, from fifty feet away, what the father couldn’t recognize from just ten? Drowning is not the violent, splashing, call for help that most people expect. The captain was trained to recognize drowning by experts and years of experience. The father, on the other hand, had learned what drowning looks like by watching television. If you spend time on or near the water (hint: that’s all of us) then you should make sure that you and your crew knows what to look for whenever people enter the water. Until she cried a tearful, “Daddy,” she hadn’t made a sound. As a former Coast Guard rescue swimmer, I wasn’t surprised at all by this story. Drowning is almost always a deceptively quiet event. The waving, splashing, and yelling that dramatic conditioning (television) prepares us to look for, is rarely seen in real life.

The Instinctive Drowning Response – so named by Francesco A. Pia, Ph.D., is what people do to avoid actual or perceived suffocation in the water. And it does not look like most people expect. There is very little splashing, no waving, and no yelling or calls for help of any kind. To get an idea of just how quiet and undramatic from the surface drowning can be, consider this: It is the number two cause of accidental death in children, age 15 and under (just behind vehicle accidents) – of the approximately 750 children who will drown next year, about 375 of them will do so within 25 yards of a parent or other adult. In ten percent of those drownings, the adult will actually watch them do it, having no idea it is happening (source: CDC). Drowning does not look like drowning – Dr. Pia, in an article in the Coast Guard’s On Scene Magazine, described the instinctive drowning response like this:

1.Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled, before speech occurs.

2.Drowning people’s mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning people’s mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water.

3.Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water’s surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water, permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.

4.Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, drowning people who are struggling on the surface of the water cannot stop drowning and perform voluntary movements such as waving for help, moving toward a rescuer, or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment.

5.From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response people’s bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.

From one of my many, varied, eclectic sources. Virtual kidnapping is basically a con that plays on some extreme emotions.

Superyacht Rigged and Ready to Go

Mariette, built in the USA in 1915, is a stunning Herreshoff designed classic schooner and with a length overall of 42.m will be one of the largest competitors taking part in the Pendennis Cup

Mariette’s pre-summer refit at the Pendennis shipyard began in February and has been completed with the reinstatement of her huge sailing rig, with the mast alone measuring over 36m long. The complete programme of work included an engineering overhaul and a full refit of her generator space, including the replacement of her generators.

Mariette will be making her way to Cowes to sail with other large classics in the Westward Cup.  The fleet will then proceed to Falmouth prior to the start of the Pendennis Cup which will run from the 9th-14th August with five days of exhilarating racing off the Cornish coast. With a further 6 confirmed competitors including the super sailing yachts: Adela, Mariquita, Velacarina, Tomahawk, Pinuccia and Zarik.  Organsiers anticipate a very busy week with 150-200 owners, crew and guests attending.

The yard is organizing the Cup in conjunction with the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.

Superyacht Flag-State Gains Milestone Verifications

The Isle of Man’s ship registry has this week received three important international verifications.  They completed their IMO (International Maritime Organisation) voluntary member state audit with a positive report; were highly placed on the Paris MOU White List for Port State Control in Europe, and finally secured entry into the United StatesCoast Guard Qualship 21 Scheme.

Together they represent three very important measures which will be easily recognised by the international shipping community as a measure of the Isle of Man’s quality and commitment to its international maritime obligations.

The Isle of Man’s IMO audit was conducted during a week long process which looked in depth at the Isle of Man’s obligations in respect of its port state; coastal state; and flag state activities. A team of auditors appointed by the International Maritime Organisation were on the Isle of Man from 12 June to 21 June and is the first time such an audit has been carried out to assess the Island’s capabilities. The audit is voluntary at present but it is widely accepted that it will become mandatory very soon and provide IMO with an established framework to approve states to operate an international ship register. This audit therefore gives the Isle of Man the ‘green light’ to continue with its highly successful ship register. A very positive, yet balanced, report has been drafted, which indicates areas for improvement but also contains positive statements about some of the best practices in the Isle of Man and the quality of the fleet.

The Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Port State Control has released its statistics for the inspection of ships visiting European Ports. The Isle of Man has once again maintained its position in the top third of the White List, which recognises the quality of the fleet registered in the Isle of Man. Only by association with high quality shipping companies operating ships with a positive culture of safety and pollution prevention can this position be upheld.

TheIsle of Man has been admitted into the United States Coast Guard’s Qualship 21 Scheme; a scheme which recognises quality shipping in the 21st Century by analysing the safety performance of ships visiting U.S Ports. The Isle of Man is included in the Qualship 21 list produced this week along with only 15 other countries, out of the possible 130 states operating international registers. Once again this is an external benchmark which is very difficult to achieve but which shows the quality of the ships registered in the Isle of Man.

Dick Welsh, Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry said “When all three validations are taken together, they become a very definite endorsement by the international community that the Isle of Man is hitting all of its targets in terms of operating a quality flag, with a well resourced and professional maritime administration to back it up. I have to thank our clients, the ship operators, for operating and maintaining their vessels to our very high standards”. He went on to say “I am delighted for the team at the Ship Registry who work hard to make sure the Isle of Man’s quality reputation is upheld. The IMO audit team reported that the Ship Registry works as a ‘family’ and I believe this is one of our greatest strengths.”

Alex Downie MLC, the Department of Economic Development’s political member with responsibility for shipping said “This is great news for the Isle of Man. It is an endorsement from the International community for our Ship Register. The Isle of Man seeks only high quality business and our reputation has been upheld by these important accolades. I would like to congratulate the team at the Ship Registry for passing the audit and for maintaining their high standards.”

iPad Control for Superyachts

Palladium Technologies have announced the first alarm monitoring system for the new Apple iPad. The SiMON2 was designed to work exclusively on the iPad, and provides a fresh new look to their alarm monitoring systems.

Palladium designed the SiMON2 to be a self-contained system for smaller yachts, providing much of the functionality of the larger version, but with a brand new user interface. The first Palladium Apple product, iSiMON is a remote extension of the monitoring system and takes much of the company’s development experience with the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch to a much higher level. Navigation between screens is based upon the new icon-driven dashboard, which uses the swipe, multi-touch technology of the Apple iPad. This version includes the integration of cameras and lighting.

As designed for the iPad it uses WiFi technology to communicate with the newly designed controllers. These controllers interface to the ship’s critical equipment, such as engines, generators, bilge tanks, batteries, AC electric, doors, etc. One or many iPads running the system can operate concurrently on each yacht, providing ultimate flexibility.

Michael Blake, president of Palladium said, “Working on the Apple hardware platform has allowed us to take our designs to a much higher level. The Apple iPad is an incredible device with a high-resolution and multi-touch screen. Our graphics literally ‘pop’ off the screen, and the multi-touch implementation very user intuitive.”

Blake also said that, “You can be assured of future advances and products from Palladium, based upon the Apple iPad and the Mac operating system.”

George's Wake

A large number of people turned up at the club at 7pm last night to pay their respects to George. These included a large number of people from his church group, his family, and many friends from all walks of life. It was quite amazing to hear of the number of things George had done to help people, and the various accounts of his exploits, ideas and ventures. He certainly was a very interesting, engaging, and generous person - who - as someone put it - took very little from the Earth but gave a lot back! Rest well George!

Places 1 to 5 are certain. Wind dropped off for a while and a number of boats packed it in early. So the remaining five boats agreed to a finishing order based on their PHRF and location on the course.

Wind started out north at 10 kts and dropped to very light and variable when the fleet started rounding Scotty Island. The fleet then spent the next few hours sailing on thermals and counting algae, save for Vixen, where it’s reported Eric was busy reading a book (believed to be “Twilight”). Eric felt justified in his actions as the book was due for return at the library this Tuesday. Evening activities including a retro music party onboard Anteus that promptly ended once Sheldon put on AC/DC and started playing air guitar in his underwear.

Superyacht Project Florida becomes Baton Rouge

Icon Yachts has launched the second of three superyachts.  Built as Project Florida, a 62.5m (205ft) motoryacht, the yacht has been named Baton Rouge and will be managed by Burgess Yachts who are expecting to have her on show at the Monaco Yacht Show in September of this year.

The exterior design of the new yacht is by Tim Heywood with interiors by Redman Whiteley Dixon.

During the recent HISWA Yacht Valley Tour the Harlingen based superyacht builder explained changes in which they have consolidated internal management. Wim Koersvelt was described as having stepped down and will relinquish his day-to-day involvement with the management team.

Jen Wartena, a co-director since the yard began, has been appointed as general manager while Stephan Vitus becomes responsible for new project development.  Koersvelt is said to be working with the yard in an advisory capacity but Stephan Vitus confirmed that he was seldom at the yard

Icon Yachts specialises in modular yacht construction and currently has a third 62.5m yachts in build that is scheduled for delivery in 2011.  The company recently began work to complete the 42 metre sistership to Catwalk which was left uncompleted when the build yard in Germany ceased work on it.

Redfin is saved!

We have heard that Lars's boat Redfin, stranded on the rocks near Agulhas, has been dragged ashore by some helpful farmers with a piece of earthmoving kit, and is safely stored on a farm there somewhere. It seems too that a cotage has been made available for all of them (Lars and his crew) on the farm, or nearby, and they are all safe and sound, besides one of Lars's fingers which has gone awol it seems. Now Lars can repair the boat. How he gets it from there back into the sea may be the subject of a another interesting blog post I think . . .

Forty Million Euro Expansion for Feadship Yard

Dick Van Lent of Feadship’s Royal Van Lent shipyard in Holland has announced plans to expand its premises on Kaag Island in the Netherlands.  He is confident that his company will benefit from the €40 million of government funding

Due to the limited spatial options around the yard, Royal van Lent will extend underground in order to build even larger yachts over the coming years.
Like its fellow Feadship yards belonging to Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw, the Royal van Lent yard has been building increasingly longer yachts over recent years.

The first part of the expansion at Kaarg will see the hall doors being widened and the dry-dock door moved five meters forward to provide the space necessary to fit the long propeller shafts on larger yachts.

Construction is due to start in August 2012.

Another change will be to one of the yard’s two slipways, which is currently built on wooden piles and is unsuitable for yachts over 45 meters. With the yard planning to concentrate primarily on yachts over 60 meters, the modernisation of the slipway is scheduled to start in August of this year and will involve underground work.

Royal Van Lent will also see widening the locks in the nearby city of Gouda from 12 to 14 meters. The bridges in the towns of Oude and Nieuwe Wetering will also be extended to the same width, with an expected completion date of 2012.

Super Sailing Yacht Launched in New Zealand

The 44.2m sailing yacht Imagine was christened at Alloy Yachts in New Zealand last week.
This is the second yacht named Imagine that Dubois has designed and Alloy Yachts has created, having built the first back in 1993.

The team of Dubois Naval Architects and Alloy Yachts, working with the owner has created a high performance, superyacht with the technical sailing attributes of a much smaller racing machine.

The desire to recapture the essence of the original yacht with low, sleek lines and a large cockpit was kept but enhanced by all the advancements in the technologies Alloy has made since the first yacht was launched. This new super sailing yacht will be outperforming her peers on the water whilst giving her owner new levels of comfort and entertainment when living onboard.

Imagine was floated to Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, the following day her Southern Spars carbon fibre mast was stepped. She will begin on-the-water commissioning early next week.

Keep Superyachts Safe Put an End to Piracy

A global campaign has been launched by the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) calling upon governments to recognize their duty to regain control of the Indian Ocean and to bring those responsible for kidnapping and attacking merchant shipping and yachts to justice.
A coalition of organisations against piracy, with the support of Nautilus and the Professional Yachtsman's Association, has also launched an e-petition to governments which aims to deliver to the United Nations half a million signatures by World Maritime Day on 23 September 2010.

The e-petition which is the centrepiece of a campaign pressing governments to commit enough resources towards ending the problem of piracy off the coast of Somalia. It calls on nations to find real solutions to the growing problem of piracy; to take immediate steps to secure the release and safe return of kidnapped seafarers; and to work together to secure a stable future for Somalia.

The PYA believes the issue of piracy has gone on for too long and action is needed to fight the ongoing threat that pirate attacks pose to the well being of seafarers, to shipping and the global economy. Pirate attacks continue to increase along the coast of Somalia and have recently spread further south towards Kenya and east towards the Seychelles, putting even more lives at risk, threatening world trade and affecting the safe movement of superyachts.

The PYA is requesting support for this global campaign so that they can show governments how angry we are. This petition is a great way of demonstrating wider support for government action.

Captain Andrew Schofield President of the PYA is invite everyone to sign an online petition. This can be done by visiting the following website:- www.endpiracypetition.org

Here’s an easy way for you to learn the way solar panels work

What exactly is solar energy ?

Solar power is radiant energy that's produced by the sun. Daily the sun radiates, or sends out, an immense quantity of energy. The sun radiates more energy in one second than people have used since the beginning of time!

The energy of the Sun derives from within the sun itself. Like other stars, the sun is really a big ball of gases––mostly hydrogen and helium atoms.

The hydrogen atoms in the sun’s core combine to create helium and generate energy in a process called nuclear fusion.

During nuclear fusion, the sun’s extremely high pressure and temperature cause hydrogen atoms to come apart and their nuclei (the central cores of the atoms) to fuse or combine. Four hydrogen nuclei fuse to become one helium atom. But the helium atom contains less mass compared to four hydrogen atoms that fused. Some matter is lost during nuclear fusion. The lost matter is emitted into space as radiant energy.

It takes many years for the energy in the sun’s core to make its way to the solar surface, and slightly over eight minutes to travel the 93 million miles to earth. The solar energy travels to the earth at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, the speed of light.

Simply a small part of the energy radiated from the sun into space strikes our planet, one part in two billion. Yet this amount of energy is enormous. Daily enough energy strikes the united states to supply the nation’s energy needs for one and a half years!
