Solar Hybrid SuperYacht

Richard Sauter, head of design at Suater Carbon Offset Design, has released details of a 49 metre superyacht concept that he describes as being the worlds first Zero Carbon yacht capable of achieving 25 knots.

The Solar Hybrid design achieves between 50 and 100% reduction in green house gas emissions over conventional engines and does so using a Mercedes Benz / MTU Bluetec unit to produce a very clean diesel electric power plant.

The concept is called Transcendence is he says, “the carbon offset alternative to comparable hi-performance superyachts.

Other revolutionary features include:
  • Azimuth counter rotating CLT high torque propeller systems.
  • Advanced Hydro and aerodynamic high-speed displacement hull design
  • Solar cell deployment with PV deck spoilers rated at 30kws)
  • Kinetic energy regeneration (KER)
  • Energy efficient equipment, including waste heat recovery
  • Computerized energy management, maintenance & guidance.
  • Plug-in Lithium uninterrupted power system (UPS) rated at 1000Kwh.
Solar cells, KER and Plug-in sources of energy charge a Lithium ion storage system that runs all the on board hotel services including air conditioning.  The same Lithium UPS allows Transcendence to achieve her maximum speed under peak loads or to navigate in and out of ports with zero emissions.

Transcendence has the potential to become a 4,000 ton per year Certified Carbon Offset Project. As such, her reduction in CO2 emissions is equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of 1,000 average people on earth.
