Social Study on Superyacht Professionals

The Professional Yachtsman’s Association is asking for help from superyacht crew in its bid to lobby the International Labour Organisation (ILO) on matters appertain to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC).  The has stated that it supports MLC 2006, believes that the MLC often referred to as the ‘seafarers bill of rights’ contains some unintended consequences for Superyachts which jeopardise the future of the superyacht business.

Following a visit to superyachts in Antibes by ILO officials the ILO Secretariat, asked the PYA to carry out two studies on to demonstrate to the ILO the effect of implementing MLC 2006 on the superyacht business.

The first study was launched to measure the impact of MLC on crew accommodation in yachts in April and following unprecedented cooperation, the response and results from yards and designers was way beyond expectations of the PYA.

Now a new social survey is to become the second study requested by the ILO and this one relates to the crew.

In order to have any impact with international policy makers, the social survey and its report must be impartial and academically sound.

The PYA commissioned the Seafarers International Research Centre a leading authority in the world on issues affecting seafarers to write it.  They are now calling upon superyacht crew to complete a survey that will give to the SIRC the information it requires to complete that report.

This is the first study of its kind ever to be carried out on yacht crew and is your opportunity to explain to policy makers at the highest level, the terms and conditions you work under and that superyachting is very different to other sectors of the Merchant Navy.

Superyacht crew are urged to complete this survey on line at:http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=TCmt0leYdVI2E93J2NuqTw_3d_3d

Results of both studies will be made available after they have been presented to the ILO later this year.
